The Ugly

Good people get passed over for a variety of honors all the time. So, does it make any difference at all that Mahatma Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt got passed over, despite their many accomplishments? Gandhi managed to gain Indian independence without a violent war against an imperialist power. Roosevelt worked tirelessly for women's rights and children. Then she co-authored the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Their accomplishments are their accomplishments. Nobody can take that away from them. However, shouldn't their work be celebrated and used as an inspiration for others who may follow in their footsteps? And wouldn't the Nobel Peace Prize (the most prestigious award for peace) be the fitting tribute to their life work (plus it does not hurt to get the $$$$)? Please post a response by Wednesday, May 29.

  1. I believe that both Mahatma Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt are deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Peace Prize is the most prestigious humanitarian award; both Gandhi and Roosevelt deserve the recognition, (and yes, a monetary prize is always nice). Their accomplishments should be celebrated for they dedicated their lives to help those who were treated unfairly. Both individuals did not work so hard for any immoral, self-serving or narcissistic rewards; they fought for social change, equality and harmony throughout the world because they believed that it was the right thing to do. Mahatma Gandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt are the epitome of the ideal Nobel Peace Prize recipients and their work should be celebrated and serve as an inspiration for everyone.

  2. Eleanor Roosevelt and Mahatma Gandhi are definitely deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize for their outstanding work towards a more peaceful life for Indian, women, and children’s rights. Without these two heroic figures there would be much more oppression today against those who are viewed as less than. In addition, one must take into account that when Gandhi and Roosevelt worked towards peace it was not with the intention of doing it just for the Nobel Peace Prize money. They moved the world towards peace because they were aware of the many injustices faced by numerous people each and every day simply because they weren’t white or of the male sex.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s coauthoring of the Declaration of Human Rights is an achievement of hers that I know and have studied well. If such a brave and courageous woman can do something so extraordinary for human rights that we learn about it in a classroom then surely she is deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. Despite the tragic fact that these two people did not win for their works of peace, they are still regarded as people of peace and we will forever remember their works.

  3. Gandhi and Roosevelt are both deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. Gandhi helped liberate India from the most powerful empire ever, the British, without violence. Although everyone in India wanted to violently expel Britain from their country Gandhi was able to fulfill India's goals of Independence without blood being spilled. Eleanor Roosevelt fought for women's rights and helped break many barriers such as helping Frances Perkins get elected as the first female cabinet member. Both these people achieved so much and they didn't do it to be glorified, they did it to help those in need. The fact that these people didn't win the Nobel Peace Prize is awful for their work eclipses that of several other Nobel Laureates. They should have won but even though they didn't win their works are still highly regarded and revered.

  4. I believe that receiving the Nobel Peace Prize would have been much more significant if it had gone to Eleanor Roosevelt than if it had gone to Mahatma Gandhi. Having not received the prize, people today still know of the great works that Gandhi did. Stories of how he freed India through non-violence are taught in schools for generations to know of what he did. Having not received the award, he is still a world renowned peace activist. If he had received the award, the money could have gone to important causes; however his name has not been drowned out in any way because he did not receive it. On the other hand, Eleanor Roosevelt’s name has seemingly been lost in history. Many can tell of Gandhi’s achievements, however, they will falter when asked about how she changed the world. If Eleanor had received the award, even if in if it was a shared award with her co-writer, it would have made a difference in how well the world knew about her.

  5. Both Mahatma Ghandhi and Eleanor Roosevelt are absolutely deserving of the nobel peace prize. It is upsetting that they were not given the award despite there accomplishments. Ghandi did so much for India and has inspired so many people. Eleanor Roosevelt also accomplished so much for human rights. The work of these two remarkable people has changed the lives of so many. Unfortunately, although they did accomplish so much they were not recognized by recieving the nobel peace prize, but they will always be remembered for the work the did.

  6. I believe that both Ghandhi and Roosevelt are deserving of the Noble Peace Prize. If they had won the prize it would have led to a wider recognition of all the great work they had done in their life time, and possibly even have helped their causes even further. Ghandhi led India to independence through non-violence and peaceful protests, while Eleanor Roosevelt fought for women's rights and children. Both of these people made great accomplishments for peace and they are deserving of some recognition.

  7. Yes, they deserve the Nobel Peace Prize but their work did not go unrecognized. Ghandhi is incredibly well known for his work but it would be nice to globally award him for it. They both impacted the world so much and should be recognized for it. Their work should be celebrated and it is not right that it didn't. However if we step back and look at the larger picture, it is more important that they changed the world rather than rewarding them for it. We should be appreciative of their work regardless of the prize.

  8. I believe that both of these amazing humans deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for they're amazing achievements. Ghandi helped India become an idependent country through non violent actions. If that doesn't pass for a Nobel PEACE prize than I don't know what does. On the other hand you have Eleanor who promoted human rights and overall mad the world a better place. I feel as though these two people deserve peace prizes and it is a disgrace that they didn't win one.
